We have pigs!
We have three feeder piglets, with two being a Yorkshire cross and one being a Hampshire cross. Both breeds are common and known to produce lean, juicy pork. The term feeder pig refers to a pig that was weaned from its mother and is fed a solid-food diet to help it grow. Feeder pigs are often processed around six months, or when they have achieved a weight of around 250 pounds.
I have heard from multiple sources not to name the pigs or get too attached. Apparently, my sources do not have young kids. Even before we got the pigs my sons came up with names. I have to admit, the piglets are kind of cute.
As soon as temperatures get above freezing, we will usher our pigs from the barn into a pasture training pen. This electrified pen trains the pigs to respect electric fencing. They will stay in the pen for a few weeks before being released into pasture. Not only will the pigs live a better life in a pasture, the meat has a richer flavor and is more nutritious with more vitamins and nutrients compared to a pig raised in a barn being fed grain.
We are taking orders for whole, half, and quarter pigs, so please write if interested.
